The Linda Grunin Simulation Lab + Learning Center
Monmouth University + Monmouth Medical Center
Monmouth University (MU) and Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) collaborated to develop a simulation center to support MU’s Department of Nursing and MMC’s medical staff training and certification. The center is housed at MU’s Graduate Center – a former industrial building repurposed for graduate and continuing education.
The 26,500 SF, state-of-the-art renovation provides hands-on learning with a 7,000 SF realistic simulation environment with high-tech manikins and equipment. It includes four high-fidelity simulation suites – Medical-Surgical/Intensive Care Unit, Pediatrics, Maternity, and Operating Room – with attached observation rooms for training. The suites include computerized manikins in simulated real-life settings, six standardized patient exam rooms for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), and a learning management system that captures audio, video, and simulator data. The lab design and equipment incorporate the latest technology and best practices in simulation learning.
The center also houses the new Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program. Specialized teachings labs include Multi-Sensory Environmental Lab, Activities of Daily Living Lab, Telehealth Lab, Pediatric Lab, and a Media Lab. These state-of-the-art labs provide students hands-on, interactive training that replicates professional OT environments. Additional new program areas include general classrooms, faculty offices, and student lounge areas with food service. These renovations were phased and occurred during full-building occupancy.
